Memphis and the Big 12

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that the Big 12 has finally decided to expand.

The University of Memphis has and will continue to do everything in their power to make sure they get one of the two or four invites.

We've spoken to several sources who wish to remain anonymous that have said that they feel very confident that Memphis will be one of the schools invited.

Alan Graf, CFO of FedEx, told WREG's Glenn Carver that "if they take four teams, I'm 100 percent convinced we'll be in. If they take two, I'm not so sure."

Their confidence comes from the fact that Memphis has the backing of Fred Smith and FedEx. The fact that the Tigers now have a President and an Athletic Director that, simply put, "Get it".

When Memphis President Rudd sent a letter to West Virginia President Gordon Gee about improving their status as a research institution, it was reported that Gee sent a thank you letter back stating “Very, very impressive.

Adding Memphis and Cincinnati makes a whole lot of sense.

Adding Cincy would get you further into Big 10 county. Adding Memphis would put you into SEC county.

Cincy and Memphis already have a natural rivalry and they are closer to West Virginia than anyone else being considered.

While it makes a lot of sense to us for Memphis and Cincy to be added, the Big 12 coaches were polled by ESPN and they chose Houston and BYU as their top choices.

Cincy and Memphis were tied for 3rd in that poll.

So when will we know who's in and how many will be in?

We wouldn't be surprised to hear the decision in the coming months as the Big 12 could vote on the teams at their board meeting in October.

Adding four teams makes sense for the Big 12, we'll see if they have the sense to do so.
